Pod Rybą Bar

As the first review, we decided to include a description of one of the restaurants located in the Old Town of Gdańsk. It's called Bar Pod Rybą, and we'll find her on Piwna Street 61/63, near St. Mary's Basilica. At the very beginning, it should be noted, that the name is quite confusing, because the menu of this tabernacle consists mainly of… potatoes. This is most likely due to this, that the restaurant previously had a slightly different menu and was located closer to the Motława River.

The interior of the restaurant is very interesting, attention is drawn to the wall with old plates with numbers and street names, collection of vintage colored glass bottles, as well as "chandeliers", made simply of a net wrapped around a light bulb.

The downside on summer days is the huge crowd in the restaurant, to which many tourists cling - then, if we manage to find a free table at all, when organizing the menu and ordering, we are on our own; waitresses only bring us a ready meal.

You have to wait a while for the dish, which is both a downside, as well as a plus, because at least we know, that our food is really made fresh, and not heated in a microwave.

Now let's move on to the dishes themselves. The big potatoes are the main attraction here (or sometimes there are two slightly smaller ones) about weight at least 350 g. You can see the menu in the photos below; These are mainly buttered potatoes baked in the skin, sole. pepper, any filling and sauce you want. The choice is huge, so the undecided will probably be pleased with the news, that we can choose two types of salad for one potato, fifty fifty. In addition, the offer includes potato cake, pies (three small or one large), fish or soup. For this not the worst selection of salads - you can choose mono salad or for a small additional charge choose three different. In addition, a standard selection of drinks, seasonally, you can also get compote.

We decided to take the potato. Dominik chose the version with shrimps and vegetables (cabbage, carrot, maize) and dill sauce, for this misery, popicia's glue.

Me, as befits a person with a "female decision", I took a fifty-fifty padding: chanterelles in Białowieża with gorgonzola and chicken by Ola (i.e. pieces of chicken with paprika, carrots and peas), also dill sauce, and as a beetroot salad, to drink compote.

The food was delicious. Personally, I am a bit bothered by the peel of the potato, because for me it is definitely inedible, so there was some tinkering, but that's okay; I just love potatoes, and for the specific ones, the more I am able to get tired. The chicken part was, I would say, classic, and the chanterelle part is good, a mild proposition for people who do not eat meat. The beets were sweet, though with an onion – they were delicious, I admit it anyway, that this is not always the case at this restaurant; we are big fans of salads, and it happened, that were badly seasoned, as if made "naughty". The compote was just apple, with lots of apple pieces and a hint of cinnamon.

Dominik: And I'll throw in my three cents on my dish. At the very bottom of the potato there was a white cabbage salad, carrots and corn. The glade was left with the sauce – I chose, as Marta mentioned, yoghurt sauce with dill – and good, that I broke away from my standard notions of sauces, because it goes well with vegetables. Everything was covered with shrimps in sauce, whose composition I am not able to define, but whose slightly sour taste goes perfectly with the prawns. I had eaten something similar before while in Spain – as far as I remember, Atlantic mussels were sprinkled with a similar sauce, but I'm not sure, did I remember well. Anyway, the potato was delicious and I cleaned the plate completely (unlike Martha, I eat potatoes with the skin).

But the salad disappointed me, as usual anyway. I did not expect, that cucumber salad can be prepared like this, so that I don't like it, but still possible. I could smell sugar and vinegar in it, which in my eyes disqualifies pig iron. Next time I will go back to my traditional choice, that is celery with cream.

We recommend the restaurant to people, which, yes in polish, they love potatoes and want to try something a little different, than that, which is usually eaten for dinner every day. A wide selection of salads will make, that everyone will find something suitable there, also vegetarians.
